At 30 years old, he's in the twilight of his career and Liverpool need a long-term solution who can occupy that role for years to come.
One candidate who has been heavily linked is Milos Kerkez. Anfield Watch exclusively revealed that Liverpool held talks with the Hungarian back in November.
But it's not just Kerkez on Liverpool's radar. There are other candidates who Liverpool have explored, including one player who could be equally as good and who could be a significant transfer for the Reds.
Why Liverpool's move for Miguel Gutierrez could be momentous
According to reliable reporter David Lynch, one of the other candidates aside from Milos Kerkez, who Liverpool are keeping an eey on is Miguel Gutierrez.
The 23-year-old Spanish defender is a product of Real Madrid's academy but plies his trade at Girona. He caught the eye against Liverpool in the Champions League earlier this season in a game where the club's scouts were present.
A really technical player who is excellent at distributing the ball, Gutierrez could be a smart option for Liverpool. However, there would need to be a significant barrier that Liverpool would need to break down.
According to Football Transfers, the defender is valued at €27.6m, which is a reasonable fee to pay and much less than the £50m that is being quoted around for Kerkez.
However, Girona belong to the City Group, the same group that owns Liverpool's rivals Manchester City.
It's almost guaranteed they will be reluctant to sell to the Reds, making this deal tricky to pull off.
Either Liverpool have to pay over the odds to get Gutierrez or they would have be really convincing in their negotiations to persuade their rivals to strengthen them.
If successful, this deal would absolutely be a momentous one. But at this stage it remains to be seen whether Liverpool can get it over the line.
