Real Madrid are hot in their pursuit of Alexander-Arnold, who has incentives to join the Spanish giants. There's Jude Bellingham for one, cajoling him to move to Madrid.
There's also the aspiration to be recognised as one of the world's best - an accolade that's normally merely handed out to Real or Barcelona stars.
Financial incentives will also be a strong consideration since this will be undoubtedly the biggest contract of his career having entered his prime years.
With all those factors taken into account, you would think Liverpool would be doing everything in their power to convince him to stay. After all, he is a boyhood Red. A generational player. Surely Liverpool want to keep a talent like that for as long as possible.
Liverpool to make an insane move
Well, Liverpool might not see it that way. In fact the club might be ready to leave the negotiations to chance.
That is according to a report in Spain by AS. According to their claims, Real Madrid believe a deal to acquire Alexander-Arnold is 90% done.
There remains a 10% uncertainty and apparently Liverpool are still keeping faith. In fact the report claims that they are willing to hedge their bets on the club's potential Premier League title victory, which they hope will soften him.
According to the report, Liverpool hope the emotional influence of a packed Anfield and the celebrations thereafter might just be enough to change mind about a move to Madrid.
That might just be an insane move by Liverpool. Sure, this is a decision that will draw at the heartstrings of Alexander-Arnold but it's absolutely insane to think that alone will be enough.
In an ideal world, sure. But in modern football, players don't just make financial decisions based on loyalty and devotion.
Alexander-Arnold needs to be convinced by the whole package that Liverpool are offering. Right now based on the report's claim that he is 90% close to Madrid, it's clear the Spanish club have offered a better package.
Liverpool should therefore be working on their utmost to try to match that package if they intend to keep Alexander-Arnold, not hoping that he changes his mind just because of his history with the club.
Losing Alexander-Arnold would be devastating for what Liverpool have tried to build. He represents everything that Liverpool have done well, promoting youth, making players better and getting local talent into the first team.
What kind of precedent will Alexander-Arnold's departure set? The Reds have to consider all of this before hoping he changes his mind on a mere euphoric whim after Liverpool's potential title parade.
