Who cares about cups? Liverpool are going to win the league!
If you’d have said to any Liverpool fan in any part of the world ‘you’re going to win the league and nothing else this season, that okay?’ they’d have bitten your hand off. Maybe the entire arm.
A 20th Premier League title has been all Liverpool fans have really wanted since those deviants in Salford won their 20th in 2013. A second Premier League title since 1990 is long overdue and cements the club as the best this country has ever had.

So why does it suddenly feel so… hollow?
Obviously it has everything to do with crashing out of the Champions League and losing the League Cup final in the space of five days last week.
Suddenly, this season has gone from a potentially all-time treble to just the league title. And, as established, just a league title is more than okay. But it is all relative.

We have also had the tremendous fun of knowing what runs to the Champions League final are like. The feeling of Champions League success feels more akin to an international competition due to the nature of the tournament (not that England fans would know what that feels like).
With the Champions League you’re having a fun evening out at the start of the season and then you get all the glory in May and June when the sun’s starting to bake and you can spend the evening in a beer garden.
Premier League success is done in the dark and murky days of December when it’s already pitch black at 4pm. It’s an attritional victory. It feels amazing, obviously, but it’s more akin to getting over the line at the end of a marathon.

Especially when, like this season, you basically have it wrapped up before the clocks have even gone back.
Reds should take their victory this season
The nature of the cup failures have also left a sour taste in fan’s mouths. The Reds barely put up a fight against Newcastle on Sunday, allowing the Magpies to coast to their first bit of silverware since 1955.
They also were on the wrong end of an FA Cup upset, putting in their worst performance of the season in a 1-0 loss away at Championship bottom-dwellers Plymouth Argyle.

There was a realistic scenario in which the Reds were the first English side to win the quadruple. That very quickly died and got even worse.
That’s why it is very much worth remembering what this season has been. For very large swathes, Liverpool were the best team in the entire world. Mo Salah may be on for a Ballon d’Or because of his contributions. Liverpool have found world-beating options in both defensive and central midfield and are clearly serious about addressing their needs for next season. Arne Slot is about to win the Premier League in his first season of management in England since Jose Mourinho in 2004-05.
There’s a chance we look back at 2024-25 as the start of something very, very special under Arne Slot.
And right now we need to enjoy it for all it’s worth.
