'Something not quite right' - PL winner suggests Reds have run out of steam

Liverpool’s Premier League title aspirations have slumped in the last few weeks, with a draw against Manchester United and defeat to Crystal Palace condemning the Reds to third place with only six fixtures remaining.

The Eagles came to Anfield on Sunday and left with all three points courtesy of an Eberechi Eze goal, with Liverpool frustrated by their inability to convert chances

It’s been a recurring theme in recent fixtures, with Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz all coming in for criticism for their inability to put away chances at a key time in the season.

With Jurgen Klopp leaving at the end of this campaign, his glorious nine-year spell in charge on Merseyside is threatening to fizzle out.

FA Cup elimination has already been confirmed and the Reds are 3-0 down on aggregate to Atalanta in their Europa League quarter final ahead of the second leg on Thursday night

"Jurgen Klopp seemed so downbeat," Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club. "Is this a Liverpool team simply running out of steam?”

The former striker also had his say on Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool talisman who has recently returned to the side following a hamstring injury sustained at the Africa Cup of Nation in January.

Although the 31-year-old has been among the goals since his return, he has cut a forlorn figure on the right wing, unable to impact games like he did in the first half of the season

Something not right with Salah says Sutton

“There is something not quite right about Mo Salah since he came back from his injury,” Sutton said.

“We know he has been a brilliant player and his numbers have been phenomenal, but at this point of the season, you need your big hitters to really be performing. He has not.”

Third-place Liverpool are two points behind table-topping Manchester City at the top with Arsenal in second place, level on points with the Reds but boasting a superior goal difference.

“The standard has to be so high and that is why I find it so hard to see past Manchester City with the way they are playing,” Sutton concluded about the Premier League title race.
