Liverpool set ANOTHER attendance record in 1-1 Man City draw

Liverpool have set a new Anfield attendance record for a league fixture. A total of 59,947 fans were inside the ground for the visit of Manchester City on Sunday, in a crucial top-of-the-table Premier League contest. 

The club confirmed that figure eclipsed the previous record, set during the game against Burnley in February of this year. 

The new Anfield Road stand was opened prior to that fixture, meaning the club could welcome 59,896 supporters on the day. 

Liverpool’s previous league attendance record was set all the way back in 1949, when 58,757 fans packed into Anfield for a 2-2 draw against Chelsea. 

In all competitions, Anfield’s record is set at 61,905, which came in 1952 for an FA Cup match against Wolves. 

The Anfield Road end redevelopment takes the stadium’s capacity past the 60,000 mark. 

Work commenced on the new stand back in September 2021 but was hit with delays and complications owing to builders, the Buckingham Group, filing for administration. 

The stand, estimated to cost around £80 million, was then taken on by Rayner Rowen Construction with the new upper tiers opening in stages. 

The game against Manchester United in December brought a partial opening, with the game against Burnley demonstrating that the stand was close to being fully operational. 

Liverpool draw 1-1 with Man City

John Stones opened the scoring for City on Sunday from a Kevin de Bruyne corner before Alexis Mac Allister hit a second-half penalty to level up. 

The Reds should have been given another penalty in injury time when Jeremy Doku kicked Mac Allister in the chest but neither referee Michael Oliver nor the VAR were minded to make a decision. 

The result leaves Liverpool behind Arsenal on goal difference at the top of the table, with City a further point behind with 10 games remaining.
