Liverpool Player of the Year: 5 contenders for the Reds' 2024 award

Here are our top five picks for the Liverpool Player of the Year award this season. The Reds have had some standout seasons.

Liverpool are about to embark on a massive period of football as the season's run-in gets underway. The Reds will compete in two competitions - the Premier League and UEFA Europa League - and it's this period that can define a player's campaign.

After all, provide the moments that deliver the silverware and it'll be your name up in lights. More specifically, it'll be your name on the Player of the Year award.

Liverpool certainly have some contenders going into the final few months. We've narrowed it down to five players who have been standouts over the season so far. The right run-in could secure them the award.

Liverpool Player of the Year contenders

Mohamed Salah

Here's the favourite. Mohamed Salah has had another incredible campaign as Liverpool's chief goalscorer and creator. 15 goals and nine assists in the Premier League mean Salah actually leads the Reds in both categories - a phenomenal feat.

The only thing that really works against the Egyptian is the fact he was missing for the first couple of months of 2024. It means there's a fairly important chunk of the campaign where Liverpool had to cope without him.

Still, there should be no doubt that Salah claims the award if he maintains his form over the coming months. He could be the difference between success and failure in the two competitions.

Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool's captain has been back to his best in 2023/24 - and that's been a big reason for the Reds' turnaround this season. He was subpar last time out, by his own admission, and his return to form instantly clicked things back for the entire team.

And Virgil van Dijk anywhere near his best will naturally compete for the POTY. Throw in the fact that he was decisive in the Carabao Cup final - Liverpool's only guaranteed trophy this season - and you've got a strong contender.

Similar form over the next two months could seal the award. Especially if we get another cup final winner...

Alisson Becker

The last of the three 'debatable' ones. Alisson Becker has been arguably the world's best goalkeeper this season and that makes him one of the favourites to win Liverpool's Player of the Year.

Alisson boasts the best save percentage in the Premier League this season, while no goalkeeper with at least 20 games has conceded fewer goals (tied with David Raya). But no Liverpool fan needs stats to know how valuable the Brazilian has been.

Alisson is an enormous part of the way the Reds play, while he's saved the team on countless occasions this season.

Alexis Mac Allister

Here's the first outsider for the award. Alexis Mac Allister is a new arrival at Liverpool, having signed from Brighton in the summer. He's been enormously important, though.

Mac Allister has gotten better and better as the season has gone on, largely down to the fact he's had to play two different positions. First, he was a holding midfielder and essentially learned the role on the job. By now, the Argentine is fantastic there.

His tackling has become so good that he's setting incredible levels - no Liverpool player in the last eight seasons has managed more tackles than his nine against Bournemouth this year. Also working in his favour is that the Reds simply weren't as good when he was out injured.

If he continues to improve, Mac Allister could steal this award from under the noses of his teammates.

Darwin Nunez

Another outsider but one who's rapidly gaining momentum. We mentioned that Salah is Liverpool's top scorer and lead assist-maker in the Premier League. Well, Darwin Nunez is second in each of those stats.

But putting it down to base numbers like that is underselling Nunez's efforts. His goals tend to be absolutely massive, darwin-nunez-is-now-the-premier-leagues-best-match-winner.

That's what could secure the Uruguayan the Player of the Year award at Liverpool this season. He keeps popping up with big goals and the next two months are crying out for some very big goals.
