Liverpool are at risk of losing Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold this season because their contracts are set to run out.

The club is trying to renegotiate with the players in order to extend their stay on Merseyside, but talks haven't proved as fruitful as many would have liked quite yet.

Although Liverpool have had the entire season to tie them down, the players can negotiate deals of their own from January 1 with alternative clubs, should they decide against renewing their deals.

Currently, Trent is the most likely player to leave, having been enticed by Real Madrid. The last report on his situation suggested that he was 50-50 on his decision.

This would be a damning blow for the Reds, as the 26-year-old is truly a one-of-a-kind player, given his quite astonishing passing range and multi-faceted profile to play as a hybrid midfielder and a full-back.

However, if Liverpool were to be unsuccessful in keeping their homegrown talent, they might have an alternative option, taking advantage of a similar situation that is unfolding at Bayern Munich.

Alphonso Davies available on a free transfer

Earlier this year, Alphonso Davies and Bayern began talks to agree on a new contract, otherwise they would sell him in the summer. However, nothing quite came to fruition at the time, and Bayern kept him on at the start of this season.

Reportedly, Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl then reached an agreement in principle with Davies' representatives to extend his stay, although, despite this, the discussions have subsequently been put on hold given the team's poor end to last season.

As such, the prospect of Davies leaving in January is now entirely plausible, or he could end up moving in the summer on a free transfer.

The left-back is known for his lightning speed and his attacking range, while also being largely solid at the back.

Real Madrid was considered to be his likely destination, although talks have since cooled and while Barcelona are also reportedly circling, they are still limited by their self-created financial problems.

Liverpool 'most plausible' Prem destination

However, The Athletic's latest report has suggested that Liverpool may consider making a move.

It said: "Multiple industry sources have told The Athletic that Liverpool have expressed an interest in signing the player and that they would be the most plausible Premier League destination for him.

"However, a move to Anfield is considered an unlikely outcome at present, though, and senior Liverpool sources have strongly denied any interest in a deal."

Now, this by no means suggests that Liverpool are set to pounce, but it is clearly a possibility given the lack of current concrete interest in the player.

And it's certainly an incredible update considering we didn't even think Liverpool would be in the running. But the fact that such a reputable source is reporting on it is hugely encouraging.

Maybe, just maybe, this is one to watch.

Through naturally playing on the left-hand side, he could be a plausible replacement for Andy Robertson, or Liverpool could attempt to use him further up the pitch in an attacking role.

But the bizarreness of Trent potentially being available on the free transfer market, can only be matched by the Davies news.

And so although Liverpool could end up losing their world-class full-back, it would certainly give fans a wry smile to know that the club could take advantage of another club's mismanagement, by bringing in another world-class full-back.
