Liverpool are keen to see both Jurgen Klopp and Virgil van Dijk sign contract extensions, according to a report.

Appointed club captain in the summer, following the exit of Jordan Henderson, 32-year-old Van Dijk has less than two years to run on his current contract. Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp, who has just passed his eight-year anniversary as Liverpool manager, signed a new deal last year, extending his stay until 2026.

According to Football Transfers, Liverpool want to "ensure the long-term future of the club legends", amid uncertainty over Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian, whose contract expires in 2025, is famously being courted by the Saudi Pro League.

The report claims that the Reds' bosses want new commitments from the manager and club captain, who are seen as 'pivotal' in the "plan an assault to end the dominance of Manchester City".

By how much Liverpool would intend to extend either contract is not specified, with Van Dijk set to turn 34 in the summer of 2025 when his current deal expires.

It is, however, suggested that Liverpool intend to entice Klopp into a new deal by promising to back him in the summer transfer market.

Football Transfers claim that Liverpool are prepared to give Klopp a 'sizeable' budget for new arrivals, as well as making available the proceeds from any Salah sale, in order to help compete with City – who have won four of the last five Premier League titles.

Speaking back in 2022 after his last extension, Klopp – who had never previously spent more than seven years at a club – insisted he was still 'energised' by the Liverpool project.

He said: "There is a freshness about us as a club still and this energises me. For as long as I have been here, our owners have been unbelievably committed and energetic about this club and it is clear that right now this applies to our future as much as I’ve ever known."

After this summer's substantial midfield overhaul, Klopp described his new-look squad as 'Liverpool 2.0'.

Following an underwhelming campaign in 2022/23, the revamped side have started the new campaign strongly and are second only to City in the Premier League table after 12 gameweeks.
