And whilst there is the question of what Liverpool do on the pitch if he were to leave at the end of the season, there is also a bigger question at stake about their identity.

Who are Liverpool without Mo Salah? What is the club in a post-Salah world?

The Egyptian has been at the club since 2017 and, although that sounds recent, it is eight years ago now. That’s two US Presidential cycles, two Olympic cycles.

And Salah’s personality has infected every inch of the club. His generosity and spirit knows no bounds.

Salah demonstrates exactly who he is

And a wonderful example of this emerged recently from Egyptian Modern Pentathlete, and 2024 Olympic gold medalist, Ahmed El-Gendy.

"Mohamed Salah has been a role model for me for quite some time.

"I received the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award in 2018 after winning the gold medal at the Youth Olympics. I was honoured in the United Arab Emirates where I met Salah for the first time and spoke with him. I was very happy.” said El-Gendy in an interview with Asharq News.

"When I won the Youth Olympics, I received a call from him congratulating me, which made me very happy. He is a very humble person.

"About six months before the [Paris] Olympics, we met at the national team camp. I gave him my running shirt and he gave me his. We took pictures together and he kept talking with me.

"One of the things he focused on most during our conversation was the mindset. He didn't ask how I was training for running or swimming, but he asked how I was preparing myself mentally before the tournament.

"I've come to believe that mentality is more than just a topic that is discussed on social media; it is something that people should pay attention to because, in the end, you can be 100% prepared physically, but not strong or prepared mentally, which is a huge obstacle."

This speaks to the exact type of person Salah is. Deeply respectful and deeply patriotic, he cares about helping people to be the best they can be.

Modern Pentathlon is a demanding sport that requires its athletes to compete in fencing, swimming, horse-riding and combined running and shooting.

Salah’s interest in how you prepare yourself mentally for such an event and ensuring that a compatriot was doing so shows why Salah has been as consistent as he has been at the sporting level for so long.

El-Gendy won the gold medal with a world record points total in Paris. And while we’re not saying Salah made it happen, he definitely didn’t do any damage.
