Fernando Torres was a Liverpool icon before his controversial transfer to Chelsea in January 2011.

The Spain international, who won European Championship and World Cup honours during his time at Anfield, produced electrifying performances and a multitude of goals for the Reds.

Torres' last Liverpool stand

One of the last goals he ever scored for Liverpool came in a game away at Blackpool in a Premier League clash at Bloomfield Road.

That came in January 2011, in Kenny Dalglish’s first league match in charge after the ill-fated tenure of Roy Hodgson was brought to an end.

The Reds were languishing in mid-table and in desperate need of a boost. Torres gave his side the early lead but they capitulated again to a 2-1 defeat.

Reacting to a through ball from right-back Martin Kelly, the striker raced clear on the right-hand side, steadied himself and blasted an accurate finish past the Blackpool goalkeeper.

Oakley Cannonier IDOLISED Torres

It was a reminder of the good days he had experienced in a Liverpool shirt that had sadly become too infrequent as injuries began to bite. He departed only a matter of weeks later, his Liverpool legacy broken and his reputation among supporters in tatters.

Before he left, however, Torres was idolised by millions of young Liverpool supporters the world over. Among them was a fresh-faced young fan in Yorkshire called Oakley Cannonier.

He would proudly wear the shirt of Liverpool’s No.9, his favourite player until that transfer away. Cannonier would end up moving from his hometown of Leeds to Merseyside in order to make his way through the Liverpool youth ranks after being spotted by club scouts as a 11-year-old.

He would later go down in Liverpool club folklore for his work as a ballboy by rolling a quick ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold in the Champions League semi-final, second leg against Barcelona in 2019.

Alexander-Arnold found Origi and the rest is history with Cannonier earning praise from his fellow Liverpool supporters as well as Jurgen Klopp. Since then Cannonier has been steadily making his way through the youth and academy ranks.

The now-20-year-old is a born goalscorer and will be hopeful of making a senior breakthrough in the years ahead.

He will have done his chances no harm with his latest outing, ironically at Blackpool in the EFL Trophy for the under-21s. And he emulated his idol Torres, decked out in a similar black kit, by netting a goal having been played in down the right channel by a through ball.

Using all his finely-honed striker’s instincts, Cannonier flicked a deft finish over the Blackpool goalkeeper. He thought he had given the Reds an early lead but sadly an assistant referee’s flag halted his celebrations.

Cannonier’s effort was chalked off for offside and the game remained goalless. It stayed like that until after the 90 minutes with Liverpool ultimately going on to win via an 8-7 penalty shootout victory.

By that stage Cannonier had been replaced, but manager Barry Lewtas will be keeping a keen eye on the youngster in the expectation that he can grow into a Torres-like figure for the underage sector.
