Ruben Amorim contract offer: How much would the manager earn at Liverpool?

Ruben Amorim has reportedly been offered a double-money deal to leave Sporting CP for Liverpool, but how much would the manager earn at Anfield?

Following Xabi Alonso's decision to remain at Bayer Leverkusen, Amorim's name shot to the top of the list of bookies' favourites to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool this summer.

The 39-year-old Sporting CP coach comes highly rated, having won the Primeira Liga and three Taca de Liga trophies in Portugal, while he could well earn more honours by the end of 2023/24.

Widespread reports this week claimed that Liverpool have now reached out to the former midfielder's representatives about a switch, while some claim that the Reds have already made a contract offer.

Portuguese journalist Pedro Sepulveda has reported that Liverpool have put a three-year deal on the table, "with a salary more than double what he receives at Sporting".

It is noted that there is no agreement just yet and negotiations are ongoing.

Amorim is yet to have direct contact with Liverpool, while Sporting are yet to receive an official offer for their head coach, who is under contract until 2026.

How much does Ruben Amorim earn at Sporting and what is Liverpool's offer?

According to a report from Portuguese outlet A Bola, Amorim is on around €2.5m (£2.15m) a year gross basic salary, as part of the contract renewal he signed at Sporting in November 2022.

If Sepulveda's claim that Amorim has been offered 'more than double' to join Liverpool, that would put the Reds' offer at somewhere north of £4.3m a year, or over £83k a week pre-tax.

Whatever the exact figure, it would likely be a significant saving on the amount paid out to Klopp.

By comparison, the German is reported to be on around £15m a year after his last extension in 2022.

Pep Guardiola is currently the Premier League's highest-paid manager allegedly on £20m a year, while Mikel Arteta, Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are all said to be on around the £10m mark.

Interestingly, another man linked with the Liverpool hot-seat Roberto De Zerbi is thought to be one of the top flight's lowest-paid bosses on around £1.5m a year.

Reports have varied on just how much it would cost to prise Amorim from his contract in Lisbon.

However, the leading consensus is that for a 'top' foreign club like Liverpool, Sporting would require an offer of around €10m (£8.5m) to allow their manager to break the contract he signed in 2022.

Interestingly, this is the same figure Sporting paid Braga for Amorim's services back in March 2020, then the third-highest transfer fee for a manager in history.

Other reports have stated that Amorim’s contractual clause is actually €20m (£17m) or even €30m (£25.5m), though these figures likely relate specifically to other Portuguese clubs or suitors not considered 'top' sides.

What has Ruben Amorim said about his future?

The 39-year-old has largely remained coy on his next steps as he focusses on chasing down a double for Sporting.

However, asked directly about his future last week, he admitted he cannot make guarantees about his whereabouts for next season.

He told reporters: "I cannot make any guarantees [that I will stay at Sporting next season].

"Sporting are dealing with their future and I can’t decide now because I gave my word, I can’t go back on that, so if I don’t win trophies, I’m going to leave Sporting.

"That’s been very clear since the start. I felt it was important to get that across to the players because we have to win. We want to win trophies and we’ll decide on those things later.

"I’m not worried about that right now. The future has been planned for quite a long time. We’re all together as a club and looking into all situations and what we want for next season, so that’s the main reason why I can’t guarantee anything."
