Liverpool’s captain Virgil van Dijk added another record to his Liverpool collection after making more history against Manchester United.

The 33-year-old has started the first two games under new head coach Arne Slot and was selected in the starting XI again to face Man Utd.

Van Dijk signed for Liverpool in January 2018 and has been club-captain since Jordan Henderson departed the club in 2023. The Dutchman joined Liverpool for £75m from Southampton, a world record fee for a defender at the time.

Since signing, Van Dijk has become a fan favourite at Anfield and has delivered some iconic moments, including his extra-time winner against Chelsea in last season's Carabao Cup final.

Sunday's appearance at Old Trafford was Van Dijk's 200th for Liverpool in the Premier League, yet another major milestone for the defensive colossus.

Van Dijk’s impressive Liverpool career

Van Dijk has won almost every trophy available to him during his time at Liverpool, and has cemented himself as one of the greatest central defenders to ever play in the Premier League.

Van Dijk finished second, behind Lionel Messi, in the 2019 Ballon d'Or after helping Liverpool to win the Champions League in a season where they also missed out on the Premier League by one point, only losing one game all season.

Van Dijk’s contract situation

The Liverpool captain’s current deal expires at the end of this season, and the 74 capped Dutchman will be free to begin negotiations with foreign clubs from January onwards.

The Reds’ no.4 is one of three stars who will currently be leaving Anfield for free at the end of the season, with vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold and talisman Mohamed Salah also out of contract in 2025.

Despite this, all three players appear to be dedicated to performing on the pitch for Liverpool this year, with the trio part of an impressive performance in Liverpool’s last home game against Brentford.

Regardless of his contract situation, Van Dijk will surely be hungry to lift more silverware as Liverpool captain this season following the Reds' Carabao Cup victory last campaign.
