Arne Slot reveals plan to TRANSFORM Trent Alexander-Arnold & Andy Robertson's roles at Liverpool
Liverpool’s head coach Arne Slot has revealed his plans for fullbacks Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson in an interview with Jamie Carragher.
In the interview for Sky Sports, Slot offered some insight on how he will set his team up this season and discussed the fullbacks specifically.
Both Alexander-Arnold and Robertson have started the first two games of the Premier League season and they seem to be the two players Slot wants to utilise the most on either side of the Liverpool defence.
Although we have already seen 180 minutes of ‘Slot-ball’ there are still a lot of questions surrounding the new head coach’s tactical approach.
In reference to the fullbacks specifically Slot told Carragher that his set up “depends on the press the other team will give us” and hinted that the positioning of his fullbacks could change on a week-to-week basis.

What can we expect from Slot’s fullbacks?
Already we’ve seen the fullbacks heavily involved in the build-up, with both creating a number of chances across Liverpool’s first two Premier League games.
Despite the success of the fullbacks in Jürgen Klopp’s system at Liverpool, Slot wants to set them up differently.
Slot explained: “if the fullbacks are all down the line and you play the fullback then he is very far away from some other players and it takes really long to get the ball over there.
“If you play closer to each other, then the ball goes faster from one foot to the other and that gives less time to the opponent to defend.”
The logic seems simple and already Slot’s quick and short passing style has seen Liverpool score some spectacular goals.
Slot also showed he understands the importance of Alexander-Arnold to Liverpool’s attack, saying: “we want to have him as much as we can on the ball”.
How have Slot’s tactics worked so far?
Liverpool have taken the maximum of six points from their opening two Premier League games but will face a tough challenge when they travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Sunday.
Slot’s desire for shorter passing seems to have been effective so far and Liverpool completed 92% of their passes against Brentford, which is better than they ever managed under Klopp.
As well as shorter passes, allowing defenders less time to react, they also appear easier to complete and have helped Liverpool to have over 60% of possession in their two previous games.
Although Alexander-Arnold has been replaced by Conor Bradley in both games so far, it would be surprising to see him miss out against Manchester United and the 25-year-old will be looking for his first assist of the Arne Slot era on Sunday.
Liverpool’s no.66 is also out of contract at the end of this season but that doesn’t seem to have affected his on-pitch performance too much so far.
Slot definitely wants different things from his fullbacks but Liverpool supporters will be hoping that they will be just as effective under the new regime as they have been for the past decade at Anfield.
