Arne Slot ALREADY on track to match Klopp’s UNBEATABLE record

At what point do we start seriously praising Arne Slot and this Liverpool side?

The Liverpool coach has now won ten of his first eleven games in charge and has the Reds sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League and with a 100% record in the Champions League so far.

While Slot has been getting rave reviews from plenty of pundits and fans alike, much of it has been tempered by the fact that Liverpool have had a relatively easy start to the season.

Before the recent Chelsea game, Slot's only game against a side in the top ten of the league resulted in a 1-0 loss at home to Nottingham Forest.

After defeating Chelsea, Liverpool can now say they have definitely been tested, and have come out on top again – but there is still an element of waiting for the other shoe to drop, as with each win comes more expectation and pressure.

Nobody expected Slot to start so well at Liverpool, with most people predicting a top four finish for the Reds at the start of the season, as opposed to a title challenge.

No league is won after eight games, but we're now fast-approaching a point where the sample size of games under Slot is large enough to predict a title challenge.

In fact, if Liverpool keep this up, they could be in line to break one of the most incredible Premier League records of all time.

Premier League points record

Liverpool's form so far this season has them running at a rate where they will fall just short of the points record set by Manchester City in the 2017/18 season, where they reached 100 points.

Slot's side are currently on 21 points after eight games – 2.625 per game.

Continuing at this pace would bag them 99.75 points this season, which would match their record for points in a single Premier League season. That came in the remarkable 2019/2020 campaign, of course, with the Reds strolling to the title.

There was a sense that the record was unbeatable, given just how near-perfect Liverpool were across particularly the first half of the season. While there's a long way to go, Slot is on course to at least match it.

And in his first campaign.

It's also more points at this stage of the season than Liverpool had in the famous 18/19 season where Klopp's side finished with 97, one agonising point behind league winners Manchester City.

Iron defence

A huge part of the great early season results for Liverpool has been an incredible defensive record, having conceded only three goals in the league under Arne Slot.

In fact, they could match another incredible Premier League record in defence this year as they are tracking to concede only 15 league goals at their current rate, the same as Jose Mourinho's famous Chelsea side in 2004/05.

In the Premier League, Slot’s side have only faced 64 shots, with just 24 of those attempts being on target. Only Manchester City have limited the opposition to fewer shots than that.

– The Reds have only faced an xG of 5.1 in the Premier League which is the best record of any side so far this season. They are also the only Premier League side who are currently conceding less than 1.00 xG per 90.

Can Liverpool do it?

It is still to early to say for sure whether or not Liverpool's title challenge will last the season. The dip in format the end of last season came down to a combination of fatigue and injuries alongside the emotional impact of Klopp's departure.

As we've been saying all season long, the next few games will tell us a lot about this Slot side.

Liverpool face Arsenal at home next weekend, with Mikel Arteta's side four points adrift in third place.

Arsenal will be without defensive stalwart William Saliba after his red card against Bournemouth.

If Liverpool can take care of Arsenal and push the gap between them to seven points after just nine games, Reds fans will start to truly dream of another league title.
