Liverpool's Mo Salah, a story of disrespect and why football is DEAD

Mohamed Salah is the best player in the world right now, and by some distance.

Sure, there are other contenders but nobody is coming close to what Salah is doing for Arne Slot’s side in all competitions this season.

Article continues under the video

Despite the constant speculation about his future at Liverpool amidst potential moves to Saudi Arabia or even - shockingly - Galatasary, Salah has been THE standout player, not only in the Premier League but across Europe’s top five leagues.

The Egyptian King has ten goals and ten assists in 17 games across all competitions this season. He's two ahead of Erling Haaland for goal contributions in the Premier League and is the most important player for a side who have only lost one game so far.

Salah has matured into one of the most complete attackers the Premier League has ever seen, and is just as important in defence and as a target for Liverpool's defenders to get the side up the pitch as he is in attack with his goals and assists.

He bagged another goal and assist against Aston Villa at the weekend, and is looking forward to two weeks without a game following his decision not to join Egypt's national team setup for the international break.

The only thing more inevitable than Salah’s continued greatness is the absolute disrespect he’s shown on a weekly basis.

Salah disrespect continues

Amidst all the controversy surrounding Vinicius Jr and Rodri during the recent Ballon D'Or award ceremony, the fact that Salah was completely overlooked for the 30-man shortlist beggars belief.

Salah has never won the Ballon D'Or, despite his importance in a number of incredible seasons for Liverpool, and the closest he has come was finishing fifth in 2019 and 2022.

While both Liverpool and Egypt failed to win the kinds of trophies that help players get nominated for these awards, Salah still had a brilliant individual season last year, with 25 goals and 14 assists across all competitions - he's well on track to beat both of those tallies this year.

Despite the improved numbers and performances, Salah continues to be disrespected on a constant basis.

UEFA left Salah out of their Champions League team of the week after a brilliant performance against Bayer Leverkusen. In fact, Salah hasn't featured in a SINGLE team of the week this season, despite being crucial to Liverpool's rise to the top of the Champions League table.

CAF left Salah out of their shortlist for African Player of the Year despite him being head and shoulders above the rest. A source close to Salah recently revealed that the last time CAF had contacted them was two or three years ago to organise his attendance at an awards ceremony.

That he hasn't heard from them since is madness.

Salah is the best player in the world

We can back up our claim that Salah is currently the best player in the world, by the way. Let's take a look at some of the other contenders.

Rodri: The most recent Ballon D'Or winner, but has been out injured since September and won't play again this year. Undoubtedly brilliant and was the best player last season but can't be considered on current form.

Vinicius Jr: Incredibly talented and one of the most exciting attackers in the world, but is part of a Real Madrid team that is struggling to keep up with Barcelona in La Liga, despite their abundance of talent.

Jude Bellingham: One of the best midfielders in the world, but looks tired after a long season last year and has struggled to find the same form this season.

Kylian Mbappe: Had the world at his feet after moving to Madrid but had more offsides in a single game against Barcelona than goals in the entire season. Single-handedly destroying Ancelotti's Madrid side.

Erling Haaland: An incredible goal-scoring record is not to be sniffed at, but has often gone missing in games for Manchester City this season and has lost four in a row in recent weeks.

These are five of the best players in the world, but none of them are performing to the same level as Salah is this season - and crucially, none of them are contributing to their sides slowly becoming favourites for multiple honours.

Will Salah win the 2025 Ballon D'Or?

It's clear that if Salah continues on his current form, he will be in contention to win next year's Ballon D'Or.

While he will be desperate to get the personal acclaim he so richly deserves, Salah knows that winning with Liverpool is the ultimate goal.

His dedication to winning has never been questioned, and the fact he is performing to such a high standard this season, along with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold is testament to their professionalism and the good job Slot is doing.

Salah's recent tweet sparked fresh rumours that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

"No matter what happens," he wrote. "I will never forget what scoring at Anfield feels like."

Even if he does leave Liverpool, he will have plenty of opportunities to experience that feeling again this season.

For now, all Reds fans have one guarantee: Salah is locked in, and the Premier League should be scared.
