Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has seen Ajax fans turn on him in recent weeks.

The midfielder has struggled since leaving Merseyside. He left the Reds in the summer of 2023 to join Steven Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia. However, he lasted just six months before his contract was mutually terminated resulting in a move back to Europe to join the Eredivisie.

Henderson seems to be doing alright at Ajax despite his first full-season at the club being plagued with injury at times. However, one aspect of his game seems to be frustrating fans and journalists alike.

Fans annoyed at Henderson's free-kicks

According to Dutch site FC Update, journalist Henk Spaan is deeply frustrated with Ajax midfielder Jordan Henderson's free kicks. The defensive midfielder frequently steps up to take set pieces for the Amsterdam club, but Spaan believes coach Francesco Farioli should put a stop to it, while fellow pundit Hugo Borst fully agrees.

In the Hard Gras Podcast, Borst comments on Ajax’s free kicks during their recent away game against Heracles Almelo: "Henderson took the free kicks again—straight into the wall, again..." Borst sighs.

Spaan jumps in, angrily saying, "Get lost!" addressing Henderson's involvement adding, "Get lost! And then he’s explaining to Kenneth Taylor and Bertrand Traore this brilliant variation of a free kick he supposedly came up with."

Spaan speculates that Farioli is hesitant to step in and tell the English midfielder to back off. "It was nothing special. The coach probably doesn’t dare tell Henderson to stay away from the ball," Spaan suggests.

Get lost!

Is Henderson becoming a free-kick villain?

Spaan isn’t alone in his criticism. Analyst Kenneth Perez also found it puzzling, expressing concern over the lack of better free kick takers in the Netherlands: "At Ajax, Jordan Henderson, Jordan Henderson! Is taking the free kicks. He was never allowed to take them at his previous clubs. That’s something to think about," Perez remarked.

Its not the first time, Henderson's been criticised for his free-kicks. Back in March, following a draw to Sparta Rotterdam former footballer and ESPN pundit Kees Kwakman said: "I really don't get this. I don't know if Henderson scored many direct free kicks, outside of this brilliant variant.

"But [Branco] Van den Boomen should have said: 'Get lost, I've scored from so many free kicks in France and in my career in general.' He should have demanded the ball and said that it's his moment. But Henderson comes up with some weird variant... I never really understand that. As captain, you can show them who's boss, but this is the wrong way to go about it."
