Former Liverpool star makes CONTROVERSIAL Anfield comeback

It's common for fans to boo players who are returning to the club they once played for.

Abusing opposition players is a crucial part of the match-going experience, and there are no better targets than those 'traitors' who have decided to play elsewhere.

Think about the reception Raheem Sterling gets every time he comes back to Anfield after his controversial move to Manchester City, or the boos directed at Harvey Elliott when he plays away at Fulham.

Most of the time, it's somewhat warranted – a team's most important player or most exciting young talent decides he's had enough and moves for money or to a bigger club.

Sometimes it's a bit less heated, as seen in the half-hearted boos Alexis Mac Allister got away to Brighton last season after his transfer.

And then there's the rare situations, where a former legend returns to the club after his retirement and gets booed off the pitch.

That's what happened to former Liverpool goalkeeper David James during Liverpool's 2-1 win over Chelsea at the weekend – one that maintained Slot's incredible record as boss.

Booed by the Kop

James was no stranger to a mistake in front of the Kop during his time at Anfield.

The former England number one was a good goalkeeper for Liverpool during his seven years at the club, but was also renowned for his poor decision making and tendency to drop a clanger every so often.

So it might not come as a surprise that he rolled the years back at Anfield during the weekend by making another terrible decision.

James takes part in half-time penalty shootouts in his capacity as member of the Liverpool Legends team.

His job is to make a young kid's dreams come true by being in goal as they score a penalty in front of the famous Kop end.

James was in position during the break against Chelsea, as one kid stepped up to shoot...but had his hopes dashed by the goalkeeper who saved his shot.

James was booed by fans in the Kop behind him, so in a show of good faith decided to let the kid retake the penalty, before saving that one as well!

Memories of Michael Owen

The incident during the Chelsea game is reminiscent of an old video of Michael Owen, who took part in 'Soccer Skills' challenges during his time as an England player.

In a 1999 video, Michael Owen took on a 13-year-old Jamie Hutchinson in a series of one versus one shooting drills, while former Everton and Wales goalkeeper Southall watched on.

The then Liverpool striker took no sympathy on the young keeper as he proceeded to score again and again, to which Southall famously responded: "Well done, he's 13."

Owen was happy to celebrate as he scored again and again past the poor young keeper!
