'Not so cool' - Klopp names only part of open-top bus parade that doesn't make sense

Jurgen Klopp will sign off as Liverpool manager at the end of the season having spent close to nine years in the Anfield hot seat.

The German will be leaving English football with yet another trophy no matter what happens between now and the end of the season.

His injury-ravaged side were crowned Carabao Cup champions on Sunday thanks to a 1-0 win over Chelsea in extra time at Wembley.

It has been speculated that Liverpool might lay on an open-top parade to celebrate their 10th League Cup win, an event which could also coincide with Klopp’s farewell to the city and to the club.

There is still plenty to be played for between now and the time the 56-year-old leaves, however, with the Reds in the hunt for the Premier League, the Europa League and the FA Cup.

They face an FA Cup fifth-round tie against Southampton on Wednesday night, ahead of which Klopp was asked whether he would approve of plans for a parade which would double up as a chance for fans to say goodbye to the man who led their club back to the pinnacle of European football.

“That is one part which is not so cool,” he admitted. “That it could be seen as that [a goodbye parade]. I don’t think that makes sense.”

However, Klopp is broadly supportive of trophy parades and has plenty of experience of conducting them around Liverpool.

'If there is a parade, I will be on the bus'

He was the architect of the Reds’ 2019 Champions League win and the Premier League victory a year later, two events which were celebrated intensely in the city. There was also a parade back in 2022 when the Reds celebrated their League Cup and FA Cup double.

“But besides that, I am the biggest supporter of trophy parades to be honest. I love that,” he smiled.

“I don't decide that, people might be surprised but I don't decide that. These kinds of things probably have to be prepared from different points of view but it’s not my business. I’m not in that.

“But if there is a parade I will be on the bus, no doubt about that.”
