Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has publicly addressed what many are calling a “snub” for Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.

Despite a strong start to the season with Liverpool, Salah was surprisingly not on the 10-man shortlist, which included former Everton attacker Ademola Lookman, who scored a hat-trick in the Europa League final earlier this year.

The Liverpool attacker has only won the prestigious award twice back in 2017 and 2018 and was beaten to the accolade both in 2019 and 2022 by his former teammate, Sadio Mane.

Last year Salah came third in the voting with Victor Osimhen taking the prize.

Auba responds to the list

Salah's omission from the list of nominees will undoubtedly come as a major shock, however, he wasn't the only surprise player to be missed off the list.

Aubameyang was one of the players considered to be a "great absence" from the nominations. The striker, who currently plays for Al Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League, scored 30 goals in all competitions while playing for Marseille last season and currently has three goals in seven appearances for Al Qadisah.

Responding to the shock omissions on X, Aubameyang said: "Do we play squash?!"

Who else was left out?

Another notable absentee from the list was West Ham forward Mohamed Kudus. Kudus, known for his versatility as both an attacking midfielder and winger, has been a standout performer for West Ham. His strength, intensity and lethal striking ability make him a highly sought-after talent.

Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface and Real Madrid winger Brahim Diaz were also left off the shortlist. With impressive stats showcasing his skill on the pitch, Diaz has played five matches at the start of the 2024/25 season, contributing one goal and one assist.

His previous season’s statistics are equally remarkable, underscoring his impact with six assists, eight goals, and 31 appearances for Real Madrid.

Boniface also took to X to express his frustrations at being left out. Responding to a post that celebrated his pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten domestic double, the striker commented, “Rookie of the season. Team of the season. No worry I [don’t] play Afcon.”

The 23-year-old missed out on Nigeria’s journey to the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) final earlier this year due to injury.
