Liverpool's cutting edge partnership with Google DeepMind AI revealed

Liverpool have come a long way since THAT Iago Aspas corner but now the Reds are looking at a futuristic way to improve their set-pieces even more.

Despite boasting the highest number of corners in the Premier League last year Liverpool only scored the fourth-most goals from set-pieces and this shows that there are improvements to be made in this department, even if they are marginal.

The Athletic are reporting that Liverpool, via a partnership with Google DeepMind, are now utilising AI technology to improve their effectiveness from corners.

According to the report, computer software has analysed around 10,000 corners from the Premier League looking for trends in order to help Liverpool become more efficient from set-pieces.

The future of football

Although the AI technology has not yet been incorporated into matchday analysis, the collaboration between Liverpool’s analytics department and Google DeepMind offers a window into what the future of football analytics looks like.

The collaboration culminated in a paper that was published in Nature Communications entitled: ‘TacticAI: an AI assistant for football tactics’  and according to The Athletic the aim of the project was to provide coaches with a tool to reduce workload and make analysing opponents strategies more time-efficient.

This in turn gives the coaches and analysts more time to focus on Liverpool.

Liverpool’s corner routines

The paper was only published in March and so the effects may not have worked their way onto the pitch for Liverpool yet but already Liverpool fans have noticed a change in corner routines under new manager Arne Slot.

This somewhat bizarre corner routine was used on the Reds’ US pre-season tour and it is unclear whether this is a tactic that Slot will stick with going into the 2024/25 Premier League season, but it was certainly entertaining to watch.

With aerial threats such as Virgil Van Dijk and Diogo Jota ready to get on the end of crosses, the thought of Liverpool with even more effective corner routines is an exciting prospect for supporters.

Regardless of whether Liverpool’s corner routines for the upcoming season are affected by the partnership with Google DeepMind, Liverpool fans will just be hopeful that there isn’t a repeat of that Iago Aspas corner.
