Klopp v Salah: Liverpool legend rips into 'MOST SELFISH PLAYER EVER'

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah found himself in the eye of the storm last weekend, falling out with manager Jurgen Klopp on the sidelines during the Premier League clash against West Ham.

In the closing stages of the match at the London Stadium, the Egyptian striker, who had been dropped for the game, was summoned from the bench by his manager and the pair appeared to exchange angry words before being separated by Darwin Nunez.

The situation brought with it a flurry of controversy with substitute Salah later claiming there would be ‘fire’ if he stopped and spoke about what really occurred.

Pundits have been divided all week long about the incident with some like Gabby Agbonlahor backing the 31-year-old forward and others, such as Egyptian hero Mohamed Aboutrika declaring Salah to be ‘arrogant’ and calling on him to apologise to Klopp

Now a Liverpool legend has weighed in with Graeme Souness describing Salah as the most ‘seflish’ player he’s ever seen following the flashpoint.

Souness bossed the Liverpool midfield as captain during the 1970s and 80s, winning five English league title and three European Cups among a host of other honours.

The 70-year-old admits he understands the reason for Salah getting frustrated, but claimed that the two-time African Footballer of the year has got a big ego and didn’t always see eye to eye with another Liverpool striking sensation.

Souness: Salah 'most selfish player I've ever witnessed'

“Salah, who would be the biggest star in the Arab world, will have - and all players do - an exceptionally large opinion of himself,” Souness told the William Hill Presents Three Up Front Podcast

“And he'll have been angry at not starting the game and be angry and not getting on to the game earlier.

“And I think that was a reaction: ‘You're putting me on with, what is it, 10 minutes to go?’ Whatever it was. ‘What, you want me to go and change it for you now? You're not leaving it a bit late?’

“Forget the weekend, prior to that, whenever he's taken him off, he's never been happy. That's what you want from your players. I've only got two goals today, I want to get another one.

“He's a goal machine. And when [Sadio] Mane was there, he would fall out with him every game they played together.

“He's the most selfish player I've ever witnessed, Salah.”

Souness on Salah: 'He'll never get hurt'

Souness also took aim at the 210-goal frontman for what he described as shying away from physical challenges.

“Couple of years ago at Old Trafford, [Lisandro] Martinez went through him and the rest of the game he was looking over his shoulder for Martinez,” Souness said. “He doesn't like that side of the game.

“He'll never get hurt.”

Despite the criticism, Souness offered that Salah has been WORLD CLASS for Liverpool throughout his time at the club since signing from Roma back in 2017. Salah has been top scorer for the Reds every year since he came in and has won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and other honours.

When asked whether he’d get into the Arsenal or Manchester City teams currently, Souness was decisive.

“I think he'd get in both teams,” the ex-Liverpool captain said. “In his career at Liverpool, you have to say he's been world class.”
