Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has become embroiled in another controversy - this time stirred by a post on Instagram.

Following Egypt’s 2-0 win over Mauritania on Friday, in which Salah scored the second goal, he took to Instagram to post several images of him celebrating the goal with his new trademark archer celebration.

This celebration has sparked some controversy and discussion in Salah’s homeland according to Egyptian outlet Vetogate, as one of Egypt’s biggest clubs, Zamalek, features the figure of an archer with a bow and arrow prominently on their crest.

Mohamed Salah's latest Instagram post explained

Thousands of Zamalek supporters flooded Salah’s comments section according to the outlet to declare this a clear sign that he is a fan of the club, with one Zamalek youth player, Islam Nawarg, even going so far as to declare “God willing, you will end your football career with Zamalek”.

Salah played the first two years of his fledgling career in the Egyptian Premier League for Al-Mokawloon, which was not one of the country's bigger clubs. Intriguingly enough, however, his first professional goal was against Zamalek’s bitter city rivals Al-Ahly.

Of course, whether or not Salah is a supporter of Zamalek and if he would like to play for them is moot. There were also plenty of Egyptian fans in Salah’s comments hoping he would sign a new deal with Liverpool.

It’s hardly a secret that contract discussions with Salah, as well as captain Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, have reached something of a standstill with eight months to go remaining on the contract of all three. Whilst all have said they would be happy to stay, their departures are also a distinct possibility.

For Salah, it has long been rumoured that the Saudi Pro League wishes to tempt him into a move to the Middle East, and recently America and the MLS has also become a possible destination for the 32 year-old.
