As speculation continues over whether Mohamed Salah will sign a new contract with Liverpool, Daniel Sturridge has highlighted a key reason why the Egyptian might opt to extend his stay on Merseyside.

Salah's current deal is set to run out at the end of the season and there have been no clear indications that talks are in place to extend his current deal.

Though Salah hasn’t publicly indicated that he is close to agreeing to a new contract, there have also been no solid links connecting him to other clubs.

Fortunately, the speculation surrounding his future hasn't impacted his focus on the pitch and he delivered yet another crucial performance for Liverpool on Sunday. His goal and assist against Chelsea mean he has 13 goal contributions in 11 games across all competitions this season.

Sturridge has his say on Salah's contract

The Egyptians latest penalty kick means he is now joint-ninth on the all-time list of Premier League goal-scorers, with 162 goals.

Because of this, Sturridge believes the 33-year-old will be determined to beat former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry's record with 175 goals.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the Chelsea game, the former Liverpool striker said: "At Liverpool, I don’t think he thought he would be where he is today because as time’s gone on, he’s got that belief, that belief has grown and grown and grown to point where now, when he goes out onto that pitch, how he performs [he’s thinking] ‘I’m untouchable’."

Could Salah surpass Henry

“So looking at Thierry [Henry] and those types of guys, players he’s idolised as well, I do believe he’s got an eye on them and thinking ‘you know what? If I can go down as having more goals than someone like Thierry Henry…’. I mean come on man, then we can look at him like the GOAT" added Sturridge

Impressively, the Egyptian has now directly set up as many goals as Thierry Henry, with 74 assists, and is just 13 goals shy of matching Henry's Premier League goal tally, with still a long way to go in the season.

Last campaign, Salah found the net 18 times for the Reds, so passing Henry is certainly doable.

Of course, Alan Shearer's Premier League record of 260 goals remains a distant target, as does Ian Rush’s 346-goal tally as Liverpool’s all-time leading scorer.

However, with Salah currently sitting on 218 goals for the Reds, there’s hope among Liverpool supporters that he will want to stay and rise up the Reds all-time list.

Is it enough to motivate Salah to sign that new contract?
