Liverpool’s desire to link up the two Egyptians taking the football world by storm was a plan that made so much sense on paper.

Mo Salah has taken football for his country to heights they knew they could achieve, the culmination of the project that saw them win four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments between 1998 and 2010.

Omar Marmoush then burst onto the scene last season, going from six goals in 36 games for Wolfsburg in 2022-23 to 17 in 41 matches for Frankfurt last season.

As a result, Liverpool began to sniff around the dynamic attacker. An silky skillset, an eye for goal and his national captain probably singing his praises behind closed doors. It all made sense.

The rumours were rife, particularly as Marmoush shot out of the blocks as one of the world’s best attackers this season. 35 goal involvements in 26 games rivals even Salah’s output this season and the links were nonstop.

So when he ended up moving to Manchester City in the January transfer window, tempers flared.

Missing the opportunity to link Marmoush and Salah, as well as add one of the best attackers going to Liverpool’s squad, seemed like an absurd missed opportunity.

And now Liverpool will have to face Marmoush at the Etihad on Sunday as they look to continue their title charge.

Salah calls Marmoush his BROTHER

Salah was asked about his relationship with Marmoush in an interview with Sky Sports Germany ahead of the game and his comments did nothing to stem the anger directed at Liverpool’s higher-ups.

"It's good, he's like a little brother.” Liverpool’s talisman said.

“I told him that I'm always there if he needs anything. We've written to each other a few times and we've always spoken to each other in the national team. Our relationship is good."

Salah was also asked if he was happy about Marmoush making the move to the Premier League regardless of it where he went.

"Yes, of course.” Salah replied, “Hopefully there will soon be many, many players at the highest level.

“We have our culture, we have many players - many talented players. They could play at the highest level, but we just need to change our mentality a little bit and adapt to the European culture because it is very different from our culture.

“I am very happy for Omar and hope that many other players will join us."

If he had said he liked Marmoush but didn’t know him too well it maybe would have made things more palatable. If he said he was happy for a compatriot to be here but he’s always an opponent it would be more.

But to refer to him as a brother shows just how badly Michael Edwards and company messed up here.

It was an open goal. It was a no-brainer. But instead, Marmoush is now the cog taking a spluttering Manchester City attack back to something to be feared. His hattrick against Newcastle last weekend demonstrated this.

And if he scores against the Reds tomorrow then expect tempers to hit the roof.
