There are just over four weeks to go until Mo Salah could sign a pre-contract agreement with another club, confirming his departure from Liverpool at the end of the season.

It feels like Salah’s ongoing contract situation is reaching DEFCON level 1.

In recent weeks we have seen Salah speak openly to the media about his frustration at the lack of a forthcoming offer from the club.

“I’m more out than in,” he told reporters in a rare post-match interview.

Since then, PSG were revealed to be in talks with Salah. However, the French club have denied they have made contact with Salah or his agent, Ramy Abbas.

It has now been revealed that Salah would even be open to coming to an agreement on a one-year deal, a huge departure from the three-year deal he is believed to prefer.

This all points towards one thing: Salah wants to stay at Liverpool beyond this season, and one heartbreaking reason makes it clear why.

Family-man Mo Salah

In 2022, Salah was in a similar position in having to consider leaving Liverpool despite wanting to stay.

Sky Sports report that at that time, Salah’s agent Ramy Abbas was sent three contract proposals from the club, all of which were far off the terms Salah felt he deserved.

But it’s not just the terms of the deal that are concerning him, it’s also the idea of having to uproot his family.

The report from Melissa Reddy states that the offer “wasn't what Salah, who was determined to remain at Anfield, was minded to hear. His daughters were born in the city, loved school, their friends and their life. Uprooting them was not on Salah's agenda.

“But there were a host of issues with negotiations; the player felt a new contract should reflect his contributions to the club and his status as their decisive edge, while Liverpool were being sustainable in trying to forecast future service and any potential dips due to his age.”

Two years on, and with all signs currently pointing to Salah being flexible on the length of any deal, it seems that not much has changed.

Anfield Watch understands that Salah is still very keen for his young family to stay in Liverpool and for his daughters to continue their education rather than having to move abroad.

This is why a move to Saudi Arabia is completely off the cards for Salah. He is very much focused on staying in Liverpool. However, if the Reds do not offer him a new deal he could be forced into a decision that would not only be heartbreaking for fans of the club around the world but for his family as well - having to uproot their comfortable and happy lives in the North of England.

Jamie Carragher criticised Salah for his comments after the Southampton game, saying the Liverpool forward was “selfish” for speaking in public about his situation - but the fact he has had to do so paints a picture of how the club are managing negotiations.

Liverpool’s owners FSG are known to drive a hard bargain, and the club’s entire financial model is based on getting the biggest bang for their buck. From the club’s point of view, Salah will be 33 next summer and there is no guarantee he will remain the same player, despite currently being the best player in the world.

The club know that a new deal for Salah will be a huge financial commitment, so they could be leaving him waiting to force him to lower his demands.

With Salah not wanting to move his young family, it puts him in a pretty heartbreaking situation: leave Liverpool and uproot his children, or agree to terms that don’t reflect his status in the game.

It’s hardly selfish for him to put his family first, especially when they have no idea where they might be living in just over six months time.
