Arne Slot knows it: Liverpool must sign MAGICIAN who just wowed Anfield

Liverpool re-established a seven point lead at the top of the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, but the 2-1 win was by the skin of their teeth.

Wolves dominated the second half, not even letting the Reds get a shot off. Head coach Arne Slot did what he had to to ensure that his side got over the line, but a lack of any central outlet in attack hindered Liverpool time and time again.

Liverpool were 2-0 up in the first half with Luis Diaz bundling the ball over the line with his body before he managed to win a penalty all from the left-wing position that Mo Salah dispatched comfortably.

But Wolves were dragged back into the game by a sublime effort by Matheus Cunha on the 68th minute. The Brazilian picked out the bottom corner at the Kop End from 20 yards out, leaving Alisson no chance.

He’d already come close a number of times earlier in the game, most notably with a free kick that just whistled past Alisson’s top corner in the first half.

But this wasn’t surprising. Liverpool have long been aware of the player that Cunha is and this was simply another display illustrating to the club that they should think long and hard about trying to secure his signature this summer.

Matheus Cunha is exactly who Liverpool need to be signing

The Reds have already registered their interest in Cunha but were reportedly set to miss out on him to title rivals Arsenal in last month’s transfer window.

That deal didn’t materialise, however, leaving the door open for Liverpool to swoop.

Arne Slot was again gushing over the attacker in his pre-match press conference this week, saying, “[Cunha’s] a type of player that I'm referring to when I always say when I compare the leagues that I've worked in and this league… If you go to the Dutch league and you look at the number 17, there's no player that can play for Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord.

“But Matheus Cunha is a quality player and he has the quality to play for one of the top five teams in England.”

His goal today took Cunha’s tally to 12 in the Premier League this season. He also holds four assists in 24 league games, and added a goal in his only FA Cup appearance this year.

This puts him level with Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Bournemouth’s Justin Kluivert for goal involvements this season and he is only being bettered by the Premier League’s pedigree bunch - Erling Haaland, Alexander Isak, Cole Palmer, Chris Wood, Bryan Mbeumo and, of course, Mo Salah.

He has emerged as an elite player in a side that are struggling to figure out who they are. Liverpool know exactly who they are - a side looking to win the Premier League and Champions League - and should stop at nothing to rebuild their side with players of this ilk.

And, you have to admit, he’d look great in red.
