Liverpool transfers: How Zubimendi signing could impact Reds

Liverpool’s interest in Martin Zubimendi was confirmed by trusted journalist Paul Joyce of the Times, as the Reds’ target for the no.6 role was finally named.

Currently at Real Sociedad, the 25 year-old midfielder piqued existing interest when he replaced Rodri at half-time in the Euro 2024 final against England, giving a complete second-half performance at the base of the midfield alongside Fabian Ruiz as Spain won the tournament in Berlin.

So if Liverpool were to activate his reported £51 million release clause, how would he fit in at Anfield, and would there need to be further departures before Zubimendi could be brought in?

How would Liverpool line up with Zubimendi?

During pre-season, new Reds boss Slot has favoured a 4-3-3 formation, with one of the midfielders sitting deeper in a manner. It’s relatively similar to the formation which Jürgen Klopp employed during the past nine years at the helm, although plenty of key differences have already been seen, particularly in regards to the pace of the build-up and a keener focus on possession.

Zubimendi would fit immediately as the defensive midfielder that many Liverpool fans have been crying out to be signed, particularly as it has become clearer to many that Wataru Endo may be moved on if a younger holding player can be brought in.

The potential signing would enable existing players such as Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to be played further forward, and Zubimendi would give Liverpool’s midfield an aerial presence that it currently lacks, especially given some of the squad’s more technically gifted players in that position such as Harvey Elliott are shorter in stature.

Any move for Zubimendi could potentially open up space for players such as Tyler Morton and Bobby Clark to be moved on either permanently or on loan. Furthermore, Zubimendi could provide an important role in helping to develop Stefan Bajcetic, given their shared nationality and position.
