Martin Zubimendi latest could land WORLD-CLASS midfielder at Liverpool
It’s been another season of being the bridesmaids for Arsenal.
After being 2-1 up on Manchester City as Rodri was carted off the pitch with his ACL tear back in September, there was the sense that it was finally, through divine intervention and birthright, their year to win the Premier League again.
Even though Manchester City pegged them back to 2-2 that day, it wasn’t City they were having to worry about.
Arsenal now sit in 2nd place in the Premier League, again, and are 13 points behind Liverpool at time of writing.
In now trying to catch Liverpool they are clearly trying to emulate the Reds’ team-building strategy. Hence their interest in Martin Zubimendi.
The played-out drama between Liverpool and Zubimendi rivalled even the most unwatchable of teen dramas, with the Spanish international seeming to be on his way to Anfield before turning down a deal at the last minute in the summer.

Now it seems that Arsenal are close to agreeing to a deal with him.
Liverpool will end up with Zubimendi or Kimmich
However, Sky Germany are reporting that they are interested in the soon-to-be-out-of-contract Joshua Kimmich.
The report conflicts itself in various points. Sky Germany allege they are looking at Kimmich, but also that they are close to a deal with Zubimendi and that, “While recruiting another midfielder, in addition to Zubimendi, can't be ruled out, it is thought Arsenal are also focused on the options they already have at the club.”
Both Jorginho and Thomas Partey are out of contract at the end of the season, leaving the side with just Declan Rice and Mikel Merino (who has been operating as a striker in lieu of Kai Havertz recently) in the central midfield positions.

Because of this it puts Arsenal in a bind - if they manage to get Zubimendi over the line then it means Kimmich will almost certainly remain available, allowing Liverpool to capitalise on their own interest and bring him to the club.
It goes without saying that Kimmich would be a seismic addition to this Liverpool team. He has long been regarded as one of the best midfielders in the entire world for a reason, providing composure and incisive passing to Bayern Munich's ranks since 2015.

But if they do pursue Kimmich then the Zubimendi deal may fall through, leaving Liverpool to say, 'well, well, well, look what the cat dragged in'.
Either way it’s a win-win situation for the Reds. They are in for a truly world-class midfielder regardless of the outcome and if Arne Slot has proven anything this season it’s that he really can get the best out of his midfielders.
