Liverpool’s youth products have been a feature all throughout age groups at the club this season.

Last night’s League Cup quarter-final victory over Southampton featured the most of the senior XI yet, with Tyler Morton, Trey Nyoni, James McConnell and Jayden Danns all getting time on the pitch.

Also travelling were under-21s captain Amara Nallo and 16-year old standout Rio Ngumoha, who is one of the most exciting prospects Liverpool have had in their academy for years.

The Reds acquired Ngumoha from Chelsea earlier in the season and were banned from attending Chelsea youth games in retaliation.

But if you live by the sword you die by the sword, and Liverpool seem to have lost a serious talent themselves.

Liverpool wonderkid tearing it up for Sunderland

Sunderland signed 16-year old Marcus Neill from Liverpool last season, and he has already grabbed himself 13 goal involvements in all competitions this year, including the winner against Arsenal’s under-21s on Monday night.

Speaking to the club as reported by the Sunderland Echo, Neill said, “To have six goals so far obviously feels amazing, and the team as well have really helped me to score the goals, and that’s the main thing for me.

I think that me and Finn [Geragusyan] work hard together to score these goals and assists, and it’s obviously led to being called up to the 21s, which I’m really happy about, and hopefully I can contribute more.”

And Neill may be required more for the Black Cats’ under-21s, as Liverpool are interested in their youth team star striker Trey Ogunsuyi who is usually first-choice.

It is yet another indication of the quality of Liverpool’s academy, that they have produced players that standout in other places that unfortunately weren’t able to get that chance at Liverpool itself.

And while any player leaving is understandably a shame, Neill being able to shine is ideal for a player who was once on the books at Anfield.
