Liverpool make inquiries to sign Fluminense defender

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Fluminense defender Nino, who is reportedly available for a meagre fee of €7m due to a release clause in his contract.

According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, the Reds have 'asked for information' on the Brazilian defender as they look to add to their squad in the January transfer window. Nino is a wanted man, though, as the likes of Roma, Feyenoord, Nottingham Forest and Fulham have also been mentioned as potential suitors.

The 26-year-old was close to a move to Zenit St. Petersburg last summer after the Russian outfit agreed to pay his release clause, but a late change of heart from the player meant the transfer never came to fruition. In January, however, the situation could change, as Nino will officially enter the last year of his contract which expires at the end of 2024.

Jurgen Klopp's backline has been reduced to its bare bones in recent weeks as Joel Matip, Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas find themselves on the sidelines due to injuries. Barring Virgil van Dijk's arrival in 2018, Liverpool haven't traditionally spent big in the January transfer window but have shown with recent deals for Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz that they aren't against dipping into the market midway through the season.

Nino has been capped once by Brazil and played a starring role for Fluminense on their way to Copa Libertadores glory, so it remains to be seen if the Reds step up their interest in him.

Liverpool have been regularly linked with Nino's Fluminense teammate Andre Trindade, though that deal looks increasingly unlikely.
