'Outstanding' Liverpool defender tipped for surprise January transfer
One serious shining light in a crowded room at Liverpool this season has been the performance of their loanees.
Ben Doak has emerged as one of the best wingers in the entire Championship, whilst Lewis Koumas and Owen Beck have established themselves as legitimate contributors at Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers, respectively.

But there have also been some lacklustre outings for players still on Liverpool’s books.
Kaide Gordon has been struggling for game-time at Norwich City and rumours of a recall have followed him and Stefan Bajcetic’s season at Salzburg has gone about as well as the rest of the club - with former Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders just being sacked.
One player who has had an unfortunately mixed season has been Luke Chambers. The left-back was a standout performer for Wigan Athletic at the start of the year, winning the starting role and contributing to a nice start to the season, including scoring against Bristol Rovers.
But a back injury has kept him out of the side since October and he has returned to Liverpool to undergo rehab, but Wigan are expecting him to return at the end of January to continue that process.
As a result, his future is uncertain. What is known, however, is that he is certainly above League One standard.
Is Luke Chambers headed to the Championship?
Derbyshire Live have recognised that and are tipping Chambers to join Championship side Derby County in the January transfer window.
As Wigan manager Shaun Maloney said in pre-season, “Luke was outstanding for us last season and we worked very hard over the summer to bring him back. He is an extremely talented player who already understands the value of our club”.
A step up to the Championship would be perfect for Chambers on his return from injury. With Liverpool’s future at left-back being undefined at current, with Andy Robertson’s drop in form and Kostas Tsimikas not being seen as a long-term option, anything could happen.
A step to the Championship would allow Chambers to develop himself and flourish in an environment more difficult than he has faced. Derby currently sit 16th in the Championship.
However, this would still be a surprise move considering Chambers is currently on loan at Wigan until the end of the season. It would mean Liverpool would have to recall him from his current spell and then send him out on loan again.
