Richard Hughes is set to step down as technical director at AFC Bournemouth at the end of the season, the club have announced. The news comes amid reports linking Hughes to a potential move to Liverpool to fill the vacant sporting director role.

Hughes, who has been an integral part of Cherries' setup for the past decade, has garnered attention from several top clubs, including Liverpool, for his exceptional work behind the scenes.

The 44-year-old former player, who made over 150 appearances for Bournemouth during his playing career, transitioned to the club's recruitment team in 2014, eventually rising to a prominent role in the boardroom.

The Glasgow-born former midfielder was responsible for the signings of players like Dominic Solanke and Lloyd Kelly, while he previously oversaw the recruitment of Tyrone Mings, Callum Wilson and Nathan Ake.

Hughes, who grew up in Milan, Italy, also had significant input over the signing of manager Andoni Iraola last summer.

Widespread interest

It was first reported that Liverpool were interested in Hughes back in January.

Recent reports from the Mail have placed Hughes on Liverpool's shortlist as a candidate to replace Jorg Schmadtke, who left his interim role following the January transfer window.

Although Michael Edwards remains the preferred choice for the role, Hughes's close relationship with Edwards could sway the decision in his favour.

However, if the Reds are to step up any potential interest, they will have to fend off some considerable competition.

Having previously worked under Eddie Howe, links to Newcastle United have recently surfaced following Dan Ashworth's protracted departure.

Additionally, reports suggest that AS Roma, seeking a new sporting director since Tiago Pinto's departure, have shown interest in Hughes, given his fluency in Italian and his experience in European football.

Now, with Hughes's departure from Bournemouth confirmed, it's certain that he will be taking up a new role this summer. Where that will ultimately be remains to be seen.
