How Kalvin Phillips could play key role in Liverpool's remaining transfer business

As the transfer window enters its final stages, Liverpool have again been credited with a link to Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips.

According to 90min, Liverpool are said to have enquired about a potential move for Phillips, as Jurgen Klopp looks to add some final reinforcements before the window officially closes at the end of August.

The report claims Reds are interested in making a deal with Manchester City, despite the 27-year-old being involved in under 600 minutes of football since joining Pep Guardiola's side from Leeds United last year.

However, The Athletic have claimed that Liverpool aren't actually interested in signing another 'specialist number six' but are instead focussed on another versatile option.

Earlier this summer, Phillips himself insisted that he intends to stay and fight for his place with the holding champions, while the prospect of City selling to a direct rival like Liverpool seems slim.

More interestingly, however, 90min's report adds that Bayern Munich are also keen on a move for Phillips as Thomas Tuchel continues to search for a defensive midfield option.

At face value this seems more realistic and is particularly of note when considering Liverpool's long-term interest in Bayern midfielder Ryan Gravenberch seems to have reignited after the Reds (very publicly) missed out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

If the Bundesliga giants were to make a move for Phillips, it may provide Liverpool with the opportunity to pounce on a deal for the £20m-rated Dutchman, who is reportedly keen on a move amid limited game time in Bavaria.

Both Liverpool and Manchester United have been linked with Gravenberch, but the Reds may hold a key advantage over their bitter rivals for the player's signature.
