Liverpool have revealed two of the most unusual kits in the club's history but the fans will never see the players wear them on the pitch.

On the eve of the Premier League season and with fans still waiting on the launch of Nike's third kit, Liverpool has announced a new mashup home shirt and a blackout version of the same shirt. Priced at just £45, the shirt is actually made up of a mishmash pattern of classic Liverpool shirts from down the years including the famous speckled Candy shirt of the late 1980s.

The kit features opinion-splitting panels with different designs including the famous grey diamonds of the early 1990s, pinstripe home shirts in red and away shirts in yellow, and the popular retro the Candy shirt.

Liverpool says the mashup is designed to celebrate title winning teams of the past. It says: "Celebrate our clubs famous Heritage with the LFC Mens Mashup Shirt Red, featuring design elements from selected team kits worn during some of LFC’s top flight league winning titles. This Red shirt incorporates some of the most iconic kit designs of our glorious past whilst proudly featuring a Gold Retro LFC crest."

The club has also released a blacked out version of the shirt with the same designs but with a simple black colour making it a more understated shirt. The mashup shirts have been launched alongside a new 'gold badge' collection of t-shirts and jackets that feature black designs with a stylish gold Liverpool badge on.0

Both new shirts are priced at £45 and are designed for fans. They will not be worn by the players during Premier League games this season. They are on sale here.

It is not the first kit Liverpool has revealed this summer that will not be worn during a game. It has also launched two pre match shirts with identical patterns featuring historic badges from the club's past. The shirts, in red and light blue to match the home and away shirts respectively, are likely to be joined by a third training top when the third kit is launched.

Liverpool's third kit is rumoured to be white with a grey pattern an an unusual 'vertical' Nike badge for the first time on a Nike shirt. It will be launched in August.
