'I cannot just let things happen' - Klopp explains rage following Mainoo goal

Jurgen Klopp has explained his anger following Kobbie Mainoo’s goal for Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday, stating that he “cannot just let things happen”. 

Liverpool dominated the first half against the Red Devils, with the hosts failing to register a single shot in the opening 45 minutes while Liverpool hit 15. 

But the Reds could not press home their advantage, with only a single Luis Diaz goal to show for their efforts, and were caught cold when Bruno Fernandes equalised with an extraordinary long-range strike following a mistake from Jarell Quansah. 

Mainoo then put United ahead, despite the visitors enjoying the better part of the game, an incident which led to Klopp fuming on the sidelines. 

The England midfielder picked the ball up in midfield before exchanging passes with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and finding his way into the box. 

He found space in spite of the presence of plenty of Liverpool defenders, curling an expertly-taken shot into the top corner. 

It meant an inexplicable lead for Man Utd, who had barely got a foothold in the game before going 2-1 up. 

Klopp was spotted on the broadcast screaming towards his players with Curtis Jones failing to get close enough to Mainoo ahead of the strike. 

The 56-year-old German says he’s not happy about his side giving away the goal and ensured that his players knew it was unacceptable.

"I'm not angry with the boys at all but in the game I cannot just let things happen,” the manager told Sky Sports after the game. 

“We are too deep, there is just one player between the lines and one player is too deep, I'm not sure which player. 

"If I were a player, I wouldn't be happy with my manager shouting like that on the pitch, which is absolutely fine. It is things you see in the moment between defending and midfield."

Liverpool are level on points with Arsenal at the summit of the Premier League table following the draw, with Mohamed Salah netting the equaliser from the penalty spot. 

The Gunners possess a superior goal difference and Manchester City are a further point behind. 

The United game represents a blip in Klopp’s chase for a second Premier League title at Anfield but the manager is relaxed, and insists it represents one point gained in the title chase. 

"We should have won the game, that is clear,” he said. “We should have had other goals in the first half already. No shots in the first half and 1-0 is the lowest we could expect. 

“Really well done from Bruno. Then the stadium is coming and we needed a few minutes to settle again and they scored another screamer. We had big chances before and after they scored. 

"As far as I'm concerned, we have a point more than we did before. They put an extra shift in, that's how it is. We will face that again against Everton. Fully deserved equaliser."
