Liverpool's start to 2023/24 Premier League ranked all-time

Liverpool's 2023/24 season ranks incredibly well at the halfway stage. Here's how it looks compared to their Premier League best.

We're now at the halfway stage of the Premier League season for Liverpool. The Reds have played 19 games and things couldn't have gone much better for them.

Jurgen Klopp has his team firmly in the title race and above title-favourites Manchester City. That's despite a summer overhaul that saw several key players depart and a series of new, young options join the club.

Liverpool wasted no time gelling the team together and the Premier League title is very much on their agenda. This, after all, is a team that should improve over the second half of the season as the new signings gain further experience.

What makes that so incredibly exciting is that this is already one of the best starts to a Premier League season that Liverpool have ever produced.

Andrew Beasley pointed this out on X, showing how this is the fourth-most points the Reds have managed at the halfway point. They've picked up 42 in 19 games.

Only the 2019/20 season (where Liverpool dropped two points to boast 55), the 2018/19 (51) and 2016/17 (43) seasons beat it. The latter is the only one where the Reds struggled over the second half of the season, failing to maintain their pace. That was also Klopp's first full season, of course.

Things are incredibly encouraging for Liverpool, then, as they'll be disappointed not to be the third-best. They're only one point worse off than they were in 2016 - they'd be ahead if Trent Alexander-Arnold's late effort against Manchester United had squeezed in past the post, for instance. Or if the VAR against Tottenham Hotspur had been remotely competent. That would have lifted them, too.

But this is particularly encouraging because of the nature of the side. Liverpool are still so young and inexperienced in places, particularly midfield. That's particularly underlined by the number of draws - they've drawn six games already, most of which should have been wins.

The second half of the campaign should be even better - and this is already the fourth-best season we've seen from the Reds in the Premier League by this stage.
