Fans of German club Mainz have turned on former player and manager Jürgen Klopp, branding him “crazy”.

Displaying banners prior to their home game against RB Leipzig, Mainz fans made clear their thoughts on Klopp’s recent announcement as Red Bull’s Head of Global Football. One banner read “Have you forgotten everything we made you become? Are you crazy?” with another displaying a quote of Klopp’s “I like people up to the point where they disappoint me.”

Klopp did previously enjoy legendary status at Mainz, having been born relatively local to the city, as well as spending the majority of his playing career at the club and starting his managerial exploits there to boot.

Guiding Mainz to the top flight as well as gaining European qualification for one of the league’s smallest clubs, Klopp was revered by supporters and the decision he made in 2008 to resign left him in tears.

This relationship he had with Mainz fans is presumably now at an end, given the contentious nature of German public opinion in regards to Red Bull’s involvement in football.

Why are Red Bull so despised in Germany?

Football fans in Germany take a very anti-consumerist view of the game, and any attempt to introduce the more corporate nature that has crept into world football is wholeheartedly rejected by the German public.

Red Bull, and RB Leipzig, are therefore seen as the No.1 enemy of the average German football fan, and Klopp’s deal with the Austrian brand is seen as a complete betrayal of values.

It’ll be interesting to see whether supporters of Borussia Dortmund take a similar stance on the matter, or even Liverpool fans for that matter given their upcoming Champions League fixture against Leipzig.

Despite the strength of feeling in the stands ahead of kick-off, Mainz wound up losing 0-2 against RB Leipzig.
