'This guy is crazy!' - Kolo Toure reveals Klopp's unorthodox secret to success

Former Liverpool defender Kolo Toure has pinpointed the moment he believes the stage was set for Jurgen Klopp’s future success at Anfield. 

Toure, 43, was signed on a free transfer back in 2013 by Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers, going on to spend three seasons on Merseyside. 

He was part of the squad when Klopp took the reins in October 2015, with the Reds going on to reach two cup finals in the German’s first part-season in charge. 

Liverpool lost to Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley and enjoyed a remarkable Europa League campaign that season, culminating in a first European final since 2007. 

Having beaten bitter rivals Manchester United in the last-16, Liverpool overcame Klopp’s former side Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals, battling back from 3-1 down in the second leg to win one of the most memorable European encounters Anfield had ever seen. 

Having swept aside Villarreal in the semis, they took their place against Europa specialists Sevilla in the final at Basel’s St Jakob-Park, but it wasn’t to be for the Premier League side. 

Despite going 1-0 up through Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool were outgunned on the night, losing 3-1, completing a double cup heartache for Klopp in his first Liverpool campaign. 

Rather than be despondent, however, the manager was life and soul of the post-match get-together, a characteristic which Toure says helped his players move on from disappointment and towards the period of glory Klopp ultimately ushered in. 

Klopp will leave Anfield at the end of the season having delivered eight major pieces of silverware, including the long-awaited Premier League title, another Champions League and a first-ever FIFA Club World Cup. 

And he will be hoping to add more glory including a second Premier League title as well as the Europa League. 

Klopp will never get angry if the players give everything

“The thing I think was the key for all the success for Liverpool was the moment where we lost the Europa League final,” the Ivorian told the High Performance Podcast. 

“That moment we were all down. Everybody was in the party, we were [thinking] what are we doing there in the party, we lost the game. 

“We saw the manager walking up there in the middle and dancing! And then walking around, pulling everybody: ‘Come dance!’ 

“I was like: ‘Woah, this guy is crazy! what is he doing?!’ 

“But it ended up to be one of the best parties I’ve been to honestly. 

“He made us forget about that moment and I think his strength is he’s a guy that never carries negative things, he lets things go.

“He will never get angry with the players when they give everything.

Toure also revealed that he felt straight away that Klopp was someone special, pointing towards an immediate bond he created among the players.

"He's a lovely man , he's a leader," he said.

"He's somebody that you want to fight for, you want to work for him, you don't want to let him down.

WWhen he came into the club and you shake his hand, he doesn't shake your hand like everyone, like managers, he shakes you like a mate.

"He created that trust straight away and you feel part of his family straight away. He’s a lovely, lovely man. What he's doing now and I have no surprise."
