Jurgen Klopp confirms Liverpool man's destination after leaving Reds
Jurgen Klopp confirmed John Achterberg’s next destination as the coach prepares to leave Liverpool this summer.
John Achterberg is one of many staff leaving Liverpool this summer. He's been with the Reds for 15 years, having arrived as a youth goalkeeping coach.
Kenny Dalglish promoted him into a first-team role all that way back in 2011 and it's a position he's retained ever since. Now, though, it's time to move on as another era starts at Anfield.
And Jurgen Klopp (who also leaves, if you haven't heard) has revealed where Achterberg is headed. It seems he'll be linking up with some familiar faces, in fact.
Klopp explained that Achterberg will be heading to Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia. That, of course, is Steven Gerrard's club and formerly that of Jordan Henderson.
While Henderson ultimately left midway through the season, Gini Wijnaldum is still there as a former Red and current captain of the team.
John Achterberg heads to Saudi Arabia
We can only imagine Achterberg is getting a massive payday here - that's the Saudi way, after all. His work with Liverpool makes it incredibly easy to find a job in European football but this way he gets to work with someone he knows and get paid.
This comes on the heels of Pep Lijnders becoming the next manager of RB Salzburg. Vitor Matos will join him there as an assistant, while a whole host of others will be seeking new clubs this summer.
And a few of them very well could end up in Saudi Arabia, too. Players are the hot commodity there but world-class staff certainly have a place. Plenty of those are available out of Liverpool right now.
So while Achterberg's next job is confirmed, it's worth keeping an eye on the others. This current Liverpool era could well find itself influencing clubs all over the world.
