Newcastle’s willingness to offload one of their big stars for PSR purposes to Liverpool has raised concerns about whether Arne Slot’s side have missed out on a transformative deal.

The deal in question would’ve seen longest-serving player Joe Gomez move to Tyneside in a swap deal.

Gomez, whose versatility has proved invaluable in recent seasons, is open to a new challenge in his hunt for regular first-team football.

In a summer that has seen Liverpool be the only team in Europe’s top five leagues yet to do any business, Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon has been a mainstay when it comes to players linked with a move to Anfield.

Initial links began when the Magpies approached the Anfield club whether they had interest in either Gordon or Alexander Isak for PSR purposes but £100 million price tags were soon dismissed by the Reds.

Newcastle then asked about the possibility of a move for 21-year-old talent Jarell Quansah, whilst also dropping the asking price for Gordon down to £80m, but again Liverpool were quick to snub these requests.

HOW THE JOE GOMEZ DEAL COLLAPSED

Newcastle’s pursuit of Gomez then kickstarted when they returned with a proposal to buy Gomez for £45m and sell Gordon to Liverpool for £75m.

Liverpool entertained and progressed talks for this deal as a medical was planned in Leipzig with the two players being involved in England’s EURO 2024 squad.

It became increasingly likely that Liverpool would offload a fringe player and acquire Gordon who was initially valued at £100m for a mere price of £30m.

It was noted how during the England camp that both players were happy at the prospects of their respective moves until Newcastle found another solution ahead of the PSR deadline of June 30.

The Magpies went on to sell Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest, resulting in the Gordon-Gomez deal being called off.

The possibility of Gomez still departing Anfield this summer is still present and Liverpool may be forced to bring in a new defender should the England international leave.

There has been interest from Saudi Arabia as well as Champions League clubs who are attracted by the experience the 27-year-old possesses. Marc Guehi has been a defender Liverpool have looked at but as of yet, there is nothing planned for a move.

The Reds also expressed their interest in Leny Yoro before pulling out when Manchester United’s interest inflated the initial £45 million price.
