It has been known for a while now that Liverpool could need to replace both Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold at the end of this season.

No one had really wanted to deal with the reality of that situation, but its possibility is terrifying. Real Madrid would love to secure Alexander-Arnold’s services while Saudi Arabia are positioning themselves to pay Salah a game-changing salary.

As a result, Liverpool have been having to look at a whole host of replacements for the pair.

One of these has been Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

The Dutchman has typically operated at right-back throughout his career, none more so than in Leverkusen’s Bundesliga-winning run last season.

So when the initial rumours emerged, and Liverpool went as far as inviting Frimpong’s agent to a director’s box when Leverkusen visited Anfield earlier in the season, fans began to discuss replacing Alexander-Arnold with Frimpong.

However, something very eye-opening has been happening this season - Frimpong has started to be deployed as a right-winger.

Is Jeremie Frimpong the Salah replacement?

Leverkusen brought in Nordi Mukiele on loan from PSG to operate as a full-back and that has allowed Frimpong to push permanently forward.

As a result, the Frimpong signing may not be an Alexander-Arnold replacement at all - but a Mo Salah one.

Take a look at Frimpong and Salah’s heatmaps this season.

It would be very, very difficult to guess which was each player’s (for reference, Frimpong’s is the first, Salah’s the second).

In comparison, here is Alexander-Arnold’s.

Why Jeremie Frimpong could be the perfect Salah replacement

You can clearly see that Frimpong is occupying the attacking positions that we see from an out-and-out attacking player, whilst Trent obviously has defensive duties to attend to.

Frimpong also has nine goal involvements in all competitions this season, building on his 26 from last year.

And though replacing Salah is essentially an impossible task, it is clear that Frimpong has an attacking ability that head coach Arne Slot could develop first-hand.

So, if Liverpool were to make a move for him, he would be far better suited as an ideal replacement for the Egyptian rather than for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It’s a fascinating development in an ever-evolving transfer saga that will determine the future of Liverpool Football Club.
