RB Leipzig's Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol has revealed that Liverpool are his dream club.

The 20-year-old centre-back, who was a stand-out for his country in Qatar as they finished third, has revealed to Croatian radio station RTL Danas via Ben Jacobs and Fabrizio Romano that he almost moved to Chelsea in the summer following the London clubs interest and that he supported Liverpool as a boy.

"That would definitely be Liverpool.

"Since I was little, I watched a lot of Liverpool matches with my dad and we covered every season in detail.

"It is a club that has remained in my heart."

ONE OF THE BEST YOUNG CENTRE BACKS IN WORLD FOOTBALL

Gvardiol was many people's popular picks for their best team of the tournament for the Qatar 2022 World Cup as he was rock solid at the back, and scored in their third place play-off victory against Morocco. The Croat has made 63 appearances and scored 3 goals for German side RB Leipzig since joining them from Dinamo Zagreb in the 2021 summer transfer window. Whilst their have been no links of him making a move to Merseyside, he has been linked with a move to Real Madrid and Chelsea almost signed him in the summer, but could not agree a deal with Leipzig. The London club ended up bringing in Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli and Wesley Fofana from Leicester City. It remains to be seen whether or not Chelsea will make another move to bring Gvardiol to the club.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Gvardiol's comments will bound to start up transfer rumours of the Croat moving to Liverpool. The fact he mentions that Liverpool are his "dream club" could indicate that Liverpool would be the only English club he would want to play for. However, we must not forget that both Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero in past interviews have mentioned growing up supporting Liverpool. So take the Croat's comments with a pinch of salt.
