Klopp reveals Reds injury boost ahead of Sheffield United tie

Liverpool are set to receive a timely injury boost for Thursday’s Premier League encounter against Sheffield United at Anfield.

Midfielder Curtis Jones is set to return to the matchday squad as he completes his recovery from an ankle sprain suffered against Brentford on February 17.

The 23-year-old had been enjoying a productive season in red, scoring five goals and giving three assists across 28 matches in all competitions before being struck down with injury.

He had worked his way into Jurgen Klopp’s preferred midfield since the start of the year, having seen his progress checked back in autumn due to suspension.

Jones was sent off harshly against Tottenham, missing three matches, but eventually forced his way into the line-up to widespread acclaim.

England manager Gareth Southgate revealed ahead of the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium earlier this month that Jones had been in line for a senior call-up

Those matches came just too soon for Jones with it reckoned that he was ready to return to action following the international break.

Having missed the game against Brighton at the weekend, won 2-1 by Jurgen Klopp’s side at Anfield, Jones is now set to reemerge following his injury-enforced time away.

Curtis Jones back in full training

“Curtis is in full training,” the Liverpool manager said after the Brighton victory

“He trained already with us on Saturday, but had then extra, because the [matchday] minus one [training session] does not have the intensity Curtis needed.

“He was with us, then he had an extra shift. He will be in full training. What does that mean exactly for the [Sheffield United] game? Let me have a look at that. Nobody else [will be back]. The others, slowly but surely, but not yet.”

Liverpool are still without Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota due to injury while Andy Robertson picked up an ankle knock on international duty last week.

Others such as Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara won’t play again this season and may well have already played their last games for the club.

The Reds are two points ahead of Arsenal in the race for the Premier League title, and three ahead of Manchester City.

Arsenal entertain Luton Town on Wednesday night while City face a tricky task in the shape of Champions League-chasing Aston Villa, who beat Pep Guardiola’s side 1-0 back in December.
