Robertson to be 'assessed' following ankle injury on Scotland duty

Andy Robertson will be assessed on his return to Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre having suffered yet another injury on international duty. 

The Scotland captain limped out of his side’s friendly match against Northern Ireland on Tuesday night at Hampden Park with an ankle injury, following a heavy challenge from Sunderland’s Trai Hume. 

He was replaced in the 37th minute after the tackle, by Lewis Ferguson, having signalled to the bench that he couldn’t continue. 

It represents the SECOND TIME this season that Jurgen Klopp has lost his left back following injury while playing for Scotland. 

Back in October, the 30-year-old collided with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon, leading to a long-term shoulder injury which necessitated surgery. 

The Champions League winner only returned to first-team action during the last week of January in an FA Cup match against Norwich City. 

Liverpool will be hoping that Robertson is not set for an extended spell on the sidelines with crucial fixtures looming in the Premier League and Europa League before the end of the season. 

The Reds face Brighton this weekend in their first game back following the international break with either Joe Gomez or Kostas Tsimikas in line to deputise for Robertson should he fail to recover.

"He's come off with an injury so we'll assess it and see how he is. He'll go back to his club and they'll look after him," Scotland manager Steve Clarke told Viaplay after the game.

Former Scotland striker and talkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist echoed those sentiments on radio on Wednesday morning. 

“He has obviously been out for a good part of the season already, Andy Robertson, so that would be a concern for club and country – Steve Clarke and Jurgen Klopp would be more concerned and that would be the injury to Andy Robertson,” he said. 

It was a night of contrasting fortunes for Liverpool’s full backs with Conor Bradley scoring his first international goal, handing his side the victory, and growing in prominence with every display. 

Klopp will address the media ahead of the Brighton game on March 29 with an update on Robertson’s injury status now expected.
