'We need miracles!' - Jurgen Klopp on injuries ahead of Southampton FA Cup clash
Ryan Gravenberch will not play for Liverpool in their FA Cup fifth round match against Southampton on Wednesday night with Jurgen Klopp admitting the Reds 'need miracles' amid their current injury crisis.
The 21-year-old was added to Liverpool's injury list during the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea, suffering ankle ligament damage following a horror challenge from Chelsea's Moises Caicedo.
Only 25 minutes into the final at Wembley, Klopp was forced into a change with Gravenberch being replaced by Joe Gomez.
Fellow Dutchman Virgil van Dijk nodded the winner in extra time for the Merseysiders with Gravenberch pictured on the turf after the game on crutches.
It was hoped that the former Bayern Munich midfielder wouldn't miss much action but the manager now admits that his injury prognosis is 'bad'.
"Ryan is not available, it's a ligament injury," Klopp said in his pre-match press conference. "It could have been much worse but bad enough for being ruled out of this game and the next game. We will see."
It remains to be seen what kind of lineup the 56-year-old can put out at Anfield on Wednesday with a lengthy absence list blighting his squad.
Big names like Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Stefan Bajcetic, Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai, Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez missed the game on Sunday with Klopp opting to use his academy players to fill the gaps.
"We need miracles with a few players, that's why I don't want to rule out for too long," he said.
"But it's touch-and-go with a lot of players, the boys who were not available for the final - Darwin [Nunez], Mo [Salah], Dom [Szoboszlai], we have to see what they can do today.
"Wataru [Endo] got a proper knock as well, there we have to see as well. I wouldn't say it's much improved since Sunday but that's how it is."
The German has relied upon young players like Conor Bradley, Jarell Quansah, James McConnell and more in the FA Cup this season and he is likely to turn to the under-21s all over again in a bid to keep the trophy quest going.
