Liverpool suffer yet ANOTHER injury blow with left back confirming 'minor setback'

It’s been a season to remember for many of Liverpool’s young players, who have stepped up to the first team under Jurgen Klopp as the Reds suffer under the weight of an injury crisis.

Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Stefan Bajcetic, Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah are currently out with knocks of varying degrees while the likes of Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai are only just getting back into the first-team picture.

The recent Carabao Cup final victory featured plenty of young talents who have graduated from Liverpool’s academy with Jarell Quansah, Bobby Clark, Jayden Danns, Conor Bradley and James McConnell among those on the Wembley pitch at the final whistle against Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Danns and Lewis Koumas have since scored their first goals for the seniors, during last week’s FA Cup fifth-round victory over Southampton.

Plenty more have been given the opportunity to shine this season with Kaide Gordon, Ben Doak, Luke Chambers and Calum Scanlon all seeing action. Trey Nyoni, meanwhile, made his debut against the Saints aged only 16.

Calum Scanlon suffers injury setback

Scanlon, 19, was plucked from Birmingham City back in 2020 for a fee of around £500,000. The left back has provided cover this season during the injuries to both Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.

The England youth international has even tasted first-team minutes, playing twice in the Europa League against Toulouse and Union SG in the group stages.

He was also on the bench for Premier League games against Everton and Brentford before the turn of the year and, most recently, for the Southampton game.

He might have been hoping for more action in the coming weeks as the Reds recommence their European campaign against Sparta Prague and we approach the business end of the season.

However, Liverpool’s injury curse has struck again with Scanlon suffering a “minor setback”.

He was pictured with his foot in a protective boot earlier on Tuesday and hopes to be back “stronger than ever”. No details have yet been shared about the scale of Scanlon’s injury.

He played 57 minutes of the Premier League 2 fixture against Aston Villa on Sunday, a game that ended 2-0 to the Villans.
