Liverpool in talks with cryptocurrency companies over sponsorship deal

According to recent reports, Liverpool are in talks with a number of companies from the cryptocurrency section about a new shirt sponsorship deal.

Liverpool's current shirt sponsorship deal with Standard Chartered expires at the end of the 2023/24 season. The Reds' current deal is worth £160m over four years, which works out to £40m per year.

With that set to expire, Liverpool will be looking to get a better deal to help improve the squad, stadium and training facilities in upcoming years.

A recent report from David Ornstein of The Athletic, as cited by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, claims that Liverpool are currently in talks with multiple companies over a new shirt sponsorship deal, with some of those companies being from the cryptocurrency sector.

Ornstein says that the companies interested include a crypto exchange firm, a platform to buy and sell digital currency and a blockchain platform [a decentralised computer network that underpins cryptocurrencies].

This would be a first for a Premier League club but it wouldn't come without it's controversies. However, Liverpool are confident about finalising the deal, which is expected to bring in more than £70m over two seasons, in the next eight weeks.

Anfield Watch Verdict

If Liverpool do partner with a company from the crypto sector then it's going to cause a massive uproar. The clubs 'LFC Heroes Club' NFT did not go down well with a large majority of the fanbase.

In fact, multiple Liverpool supporter groups, who were advised about the NFT project before its release, were openly against the idea of it.

However, the club disregarded the opposition to it and released it. It's likely that they'll do the same if a big crypto company puts up a large sum for the shirt sponsorship.

As a fan who isn't really in the crypto space, as long as it looks good on the kit and they pay over £50m a season for it then that's good enough for me.
