Real Madrid are the team most likely to land the England man with reports already out there that talks have commenced between the two parties.

Liverpool are powerless to prevent the right-back from holding talks with Madrid and it’s going to take a pretty sizeable offer to convince him to stay.

The Reds have been linked with several right-backs as the countdown continues on Trent’s Anfield career. The likes of Jeremie Frimpong, Lutsharel Geertruida, Vanderson and Amar Dedic have all been mentioned as potentially incoming signings.

There is also the option of using Conor Bradley as a starting right-back in the future but the Northern Ireland international has a contract situation to sort of his own.

Bradley, 21, has already held his own in plenty of big-name Liverpool matches; he was an EFL Cup winner last season versus Chelsea, expertly filling in when Alexander-Arnold was injured.

The heartbreaking truth about Trent

He also dominated a match earlier in the season against Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid when Trent was again laid up with a hamstring strain.

The homegrown youngster has shown time and again he has got the form and consistency to replace Trent although whether he can do it long-term, season after season, remains to be seen.

But even if Trent stays there are signs beginning to appear that he will need replacing on a more regular basis.

Liverpool fans will have been concerned to see the defender go off early in the Reds’ victory over Bournemouth with what appeared to be another hamstring injury.

It looked on first glance similar to the one he suffered earlier in the season against Aston Villa which meant he missed the international fixtures back in November.

Although he’s only in his mid-20s, Alexander-Arnold is closing in on 400 senior matches and has been in and around the Liverpool first team since 2016.

If these injuries are to become more frequent then the heartbreaking truth might be that the Reds are right to look at moving on.

Securing him to a new deal will cost upwards of £200,000 per week, on a multiple-year contract, and if there are no guarantees over his ongoing fitness then sporting director Richard Hughes will have to weigh up a deal carefully.
