Liverpool decided not to hire Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP this year. His response has been remarkable.

There was a point earlier in 2024 where Ruben Amorim looked nailed on to be the next Liverpool boss. Someone had to replace Jurgen Klopp and all signs pointed to the Sporting CP manager.

After all, Amorim was darting towards a second Primeira Liga title - and he’d eventually get it. His style of football ticked all the right boxes and there was genuine enthusiasm.

And then it all fell apart.

Amorim flew out to meet West Ham United in London, something that felt like a pressure tactic to hurry Liverpool along. The entire mood changed and suddenly, the Portuguese boss was out of the running.

Bullet dodged?

Liverpool went with Arne Slot instead and it’s safe to say that everyone is thrilled with that decision. Slot has been fantastic, instantly clicking with the fans and making changes to the team that have them sitting at the top of the Premier League.

So what of Amorim?

Ruben Amorim thriving with Sporting CP

It was a weird one for Sporting. Their manager pretty openly sought an exit to England, seemingly telling them that he thought he could take a step up.

How do the fans react to that? How do the player react to that?

Incredibly well, it turns out. Sporting have been remarkable to start the season, winning eight from eight in the league.

But that’s underselling it - they’ve scored 27 and conceded just twice. That includes a 2-0 win vs FC Porto in an early title statement.

Sporting’s form has carried over to the UEFA Champions League, too. They beat Lille 2-0, drew 1-1 away at PSV Eindhoven, and then picked up another 2-0 win against Sturm Graz on Tuesday evening.

That’s the same Sturm Graz that absolutely battered Pep Lijnders' Red Bull Salzburg 5-0 before the international break.

Amorim also has Viktor Gyokeres playing at an unbelievable level. The Swede has scored 11 goals in his eight league games, as well as another two in the Champions League.

Liverpool can be happy with what they have

Liverpool are better off with Slot - we certainly believe that. But it’s pretty clear at this point that their ‘runner up’ for the job at Anfield is also a special manager.

We’re sure he’ll end up at a new club before long, possibly in 2025, and it feels like destiny that he comes up against Slot’s Reds down the line. And that could be one for the ages.
