Every team needs a working midfield in order to succeed, which is why the club bought four players during the 2023 summer transfer window after it became clear that the team needed an overhaul.

And while the new personnel took a little while to get used to their new surroundings, running out of gas in last season's title charge, it should be to no surprise that Liverpool are front-runners to win the Premier League this season, as they're dominating the middle of the pitch once again.

Under Arne Slot, the engine room is firing on all cylinders and the team is able to play with control on the ball, dictating play in whichever way they choose and leaving teams in the dust with smart dribbles and bursts of pace.

Of course, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboslzai and Alexis Mac Allister will be hailed as the main reasons why Liverpool are much improved in the midfield area, but while they are amongst the best in the Premier League, it has been confirmed that one of the Reds' other players is the best in England.

Curtis Jones - Liverpool's unsung hero

According to a study from SciSports, looking at central and defensive midfielder's performances per 90 minutes, Jones ranks the highest.

The analysis looks at players who have fewer than 900 minutes and it measures players' passing, defensive positioning and transition forcing abilities.

As such, while Jones might not play every single week, his efforts for the team are second to none and he is always able to make an impact when given the opportunity.

In addition, Jones is rarely given a specific role; sometimes he will be playing deep as a partner for Gravenberch in a defensive double-pivot, whereas at others, he will join Szoboszlai as the relentlessly pressing workhorse in attack, desperate to win the ball back in a dangerous position.

He has three goals and six assists this season, but understanding his usefulness to the team requires an ability to look at the intangibles - the less-spoken metrics beyond goals and assists.

His work rate for example is phenomenal and as a homegrown player who was born in Liverpool, he is one of the mouthpieces for the fans on the pitch, wearing his heart on his sleeve to deliver for his boyhood club.

So while his performance against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday last week in the Champions League might have been a little underwhelming, he only really featured in extra time, and when the tie went to penalties, he decided to wield the responsibility to step up and take one.

Regardless of the standard of save from Gianluigi Donnarumma, the fact is that he missed, which contributed to Liverpool getting knocked out of the tournament, but the level of maturity that he showed in stepping up when his team needed him to cannot be understated.

After the game, he posted on social media re-affirming his commitment to the club.

As such, while he may get overlooked in Liverpool's midfield by more flashy or polished players, he performs when the Reds need him to, he gets stuck in when the team is facing adversity - such as when Abdoulaye Doucoure taunted the Liverpool fans at the end of the Merseyside Derby in February - and statistically, he is one of the Premier League's best.
